Lincoln Bicentennial Resolution

Feb 13, 2009
Press Release

Washington, DC - Congressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-19) cosponsored a House Resolution (H. Res. 139) introduced by Congressman Phil Hare (D, Illinois-17) "Commemorating the life and legacy of President Abraham Lincoln on the bicentennial of his birth."  The resolution passed the House unanimously February 13.

"It is with great pride that we celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of one of our nation's greatest presidents and an enduring treasure of our state," Shimkus noted.  "Not only is the Lincoln story one of hope for all, but it is also a story of second chances and paying the price for one's beliefs."

In Washington, Shimkus attended a National Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Lincoln Memorial in the morning on February 12.  He presented a wreath on behalf of the Illinois State Society of which he is president this year.

"With the President's visit to Springfield this week, the legacy of Lincoln is in the international spotlight, and I am proud to be an Illinoisan and a Republican," he added.
