Centralia's George Presents 9/11 Commemorative Flag to Shimkus
Maryville, Illinois – Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Centralia resident Jerri George felt the surge of patriotism across the country and was prompted to fashion a special flag in honor of first responders on that day – and every day – who have sacrificed so selflessly to protect the American people.
George recently decided to find a long-term home for her creation, which features the date, "September 11, 2001" above the New York skyline and the phrase, "Remembering Our Heroes." At a local event, she met Congressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-15) and mentioned the search for an appropriate location to display her commemorative work of art, which over time has been signed by dozens of area first responders.
Shimkus offered to accept the flag for the 15th Congressional District, and on April 26 George delivered it to his office at 15 Professional Park Drive in Maryville (pictured above), where it is now on public display.
"I am honored to receive this on behalf of the 15th District," Shimkus said. "It was obviously a labor of love for Ms. George, and my office will be proud to show it to all our visitors."
